Michael di Pretoro
Senior Consultant

Michael di Pretoro has served as a Senior Consultant to Global Risk & Investigative Diligence, LLC with particular emphasis on projects centered in Asia and Eastern Europe.

Mr. di Pretoro is also the Principal for di Pretoro International LLC. Mr. di Pretoro set up this high end risk consultancy and international investigations service in March, 2012. The focus of this international consultancy is China, other parts of Asia, Russia and the CIS.

He formerly served as a Managing Director in the Global Risk and Investigations Practice, part of the Forensic and Litigation Consulting segment of FTI Consulting. At that time, he was based in San Francisco with primary responsibility for Asia Pacific. Mr. di Pretoro has extensive experience in Asia, having lived in Asia for over 8 years and working on Asia related matters for over 25 years. While with FTI, Michael specialized in conducting complex investigative assignments involving fraud or corruption (including FCPA related matters), business intelligence and due diligence investigations, asset searching, brand integrity and other risk consulting services.

Prior to joining FTI Consulting, Mr. di Pretoro spent 30 years with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) where he retired as the Deputy Assistant Director in charge of international operations, including the Bureau’s Legal Attaché program and FBI personnel assigned to U.S. Embassies worldwide. He also had responsibility for SIOC, the FBI’s 24 hour crisis command center. Prior to this assignment, he served over 10 years abroad, and his postings included being the Bureau’s first Legal Attaché in Moscow, Russia, the senior representative in Hong Kong (with regional responsibility to include the PRC and India) and in Manila, Philippines. In 1992, he initiated a working relationship between the FBI and Chinese authorities on criminal justice matters. He has extensive international investigative experience, particularly in the areas of organized crime and corruption, white collar crime and international terrorism investigations. As part of these duties, he managed FCPA related investigations in the Philippines and Russia.

Following his Bureau career, Mr. di Pretoro worked in London for Goldman Sachs as its Regional Security Director covering Europe, Africa and the Middle East. He also worked closely with the bank’s legal department on investigative due diligence and business intelligence projects, focused on parts of the former Soviet Union and other emerging markets. More recently, Mr. di Pretoro returned home to San Francisco where he managed the Bay Area office for an international investigative group, focused on international due diligence inquiries, particularly in Asia, Russia and Europe. He has also travelled widely in U.S., facilitating workshops for U.S. mayors and senior local officials, on behalf of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), on how to prepare for, respond to and recover from natural disasters as well as terrorism incidents involving weapons of mass destruction.

Mr. di Pretoro has a B.A. from Syracuse University and a Juris Doctor degree from Albany Law School. He is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), the World Association of Detectives (WAD), the American Society for Industrial Security (ASIS), and the Society of Former Agents of the FBI. Michael speaks fluent Russian.
